Definition of ASTM A584, ASTM 954 or ASTM 932?

ASTM International, which was formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials, is responsible for the development and communication of manufacturing standards worldwide. ASTM International’s standards detail specific procedures that should be used in materials testing and manufacturing. ASTM A584, ASTM A954 and ASTM A932 are three standards that have been implemented by ASTM International since 1997.

ASTM Standards

ASTM standards are observed in 135 countries. The standards dictate the materials specifications requirements for a wide variety of manufacturing oeuvres, ranging from nanotechnology to large-scale construction projects. Other standards indicate the best practices that are used to create certain materials or the best practices for testing materials for properties that are critical to their function.


ASTM A954 is an outdated ASTM International standard that previously specified the material specifications for austenitic chromium-nickel-silicon alloy steel pipes. Pipes could be produced from the alloy in both seamless and welded forms. ASTM A954 specified that the pipes must contain a chromium content of less than 10.5 percent. Other material specifications varied based on the dimensions of the pipe. The ASTM A954 standard was discontinued in 2005 when it was determined that no pipe manufacturers are still using the alloy in question.


The ASTM A932 standard was sanctioned by ASTM International in 2006. ASTM A932 describes a best-practices method for determining the alternating-current magnetic properties of an amorphous, or non-crystalline, magnetic material. The standard describes the procedure for testing and calculating the electrical properties of the amorphous material at frequencies ranging from 25 to 400 Hertz. This standard is intended for use in quality control and materials acceptance procedures and must be used in conjunction with the magnetic testing principles described in the ASTM A34 standard.


ASTM A584 details the materials specifications required for erecting aluminum-coated steel fences, as determined by an ASTM International subcommittee in 1997. The materials requirements vary based on a number of factors, including the style of fence construction, whether the fence will have openings, and the uses of the fence, such as use for railroad and highway purposes. ASTM A584 was withdrawn from use in 2002 and replaced by ASTM A116, which provides further specification regarding construction of metal-coated steel fences.
