Buttweld Pipe Fitting Specification & Standards
Welded pipe fittings are made as per ASME spec B16.9. ASME B16.9 covers factory made wrought steel butwelding fittings in sizes 1/2″ to 48″. This standard however does not cover low pressure corrosion resistant buttwelding fittings. See MSS SP-43, Wrought Stainless Steel Butt-Welding Fittings.A234 WPB is the most common material used for carbon steel butt welded fittings.
ASTM A234 WPB is the Standard Specification for Piping Fittings of Wrought Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel for Moderate and High Temperature Service.

- The sum of Niobium and Molybdenum shall not exceed 0.32%.

Reducers are usually concentric but eccentric reducers are used when required to maintain the same top-or bottom-of-pipe level.
A reducer can be used either as nozzle or as diffuser depending on the mach number of the flow.
A reducer allows for a change in pipe size to meet hydraulic flow requirements of the system, or to adapt to existing piping of a different size.

What is the difference between concentric and eccentric reducers ?
A reducer is the component in a pipeline that reduces the pipe size from a larger to a smaller bore (inner diameter).
- Concentric reducer is symmetrical both ends are aligned along the center.
- Eccentric reducer is not symmetrical ends are off center of one another.

Length of reducers
The length of a Reducer is very short in relation to the diameter, so in some dimensions the transition from one to another diameter is very abruptly. For example, a reducer 6″ x 2½” has a length of 140 mm. On this short distance a pipeline will be reduced from 168.3 mm O.D. to 73 mm O.D. During the design phase of a new pipe system, a piping designer certainly must think about it.

Uses of Concentric and Eccentric Reducers
In horizontal liquid piping, eccentric reducer must be installed with flat side up so that it can prevent trapping air in the piping system. As an exception, same is flat side down in piperack where same Bottom of Pipe (BOP) has to be maintained. Other exception is with control valves. A eccentric reducer with flat side down will give a more constant flow through the control valve rather than a concentric reducer or eccentric reducer with flat side up, which will give your more flow disruption and will cause problems with your control valve.
In horizontal gas / vapor / steam piping, eccentric reducer must be installed with flat side down which allows condensed water or fluid to drain at low points.
Eccentric reducers are used at the suction side of pumps to ensure air does not accumulate in the pipe. The gradual accumulation of air in a concentric reducer could result in a large bubble that could eventually cause the pump to stall or cause cavitation when drawn into the pump.
Reducers in vertical lines are generally concentric unless the layout dictates otherwise.
