What is pipeline steel plate (steel coil)
As we know line pipe or casing and tubing have two different manufacturing types, seamless and welded. So pipeline steel plate is used to make welded line pipe, including ERW, LSAW, SSAW welding processes. Further more, casing and tubing in API 5CT standard could also be made in welded ERW type, so pipeline steel plate and coils also covers these pipes. (But in most cases, casing and tubing are required in seamless types.)

Why we use pipeline steel plate for making pipes
With the developed market needs for oil and gas energy, the heavy and large diameters line pipes are required more and more in the pipeline transmission systems. But seamless pipe could not be manufactured more than 40 inch diameters (generally OD is below 20”). So in this situation, pipeline steel plate is coming up and has been taken as the raw material for making API 5L line pipes. Same with pipes, There are also have grades from B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X70, in PSL1 and PSL2 levels of pipeline steel plate.

Pipeline steel plate and coils materials in Carbon steel
Through the heat analysis of API 5L pipes, we could find out that the steel plate for making oil and gas line pipe belongs to carbon steel plate.

So what is carbon steel plate? To be simple, carbon steel plate is the steel that didn’t contain any alloy steel elements. And pipeline steel plate is as one of the low carbon steel plate. Which the content value not exceed 0.26%. (When referring pipeline steel plate for sour services the carbon is less than general pipeline steel)

Different types of plates and their usage
Meanwhile, we would like to introduce all types of steel plate for sale.

Steel Plate Types for sale

Key notes to manufacturing pipeline steel plate
We have to perform enough tests to verify the pipeline steel plate material complied to API 5L standard. So below inspection methods should be done in manufacturing processes.

Hot rolling processes in API 5L pipeline standard

  • Impacting test
  • UT (Ultrasonic test and examination)
  • DWTT (Drop weight test)
  • Hardness inspection

Chemical and mechanical properties for pipeline steel
We could find details specifications from API SPEC 5L, but generally for PSL1 pipe (up to X70) is C Maximum 0.26, Mn Max 1.2% (to 1.45% for higher grade MX is higher), P and S shall be less than 0.030%.

Applications for API, ASTM Steel Plate
API steel plate is for manufacturing large diameters welded line pipe for the pipelines, welding process including ERW, LSAW, and SSAW, depending on the different welding process, the raw material will be in rectangular steel plate, steel sheet, or be in steel coil.

Besides of the application for the API 5L Plate, steel plates with different material also have been widely applied in oil and gas industries, Construction, Structural, Vessel, Tank, Boiler, Shipbuilding, Machinery manufacturing.

API material carries a comprehensive list of additional supplemental code requirements, as well as multiple grades (grade 50, 60, etc.), which are all available upon request.[……]
