API 5L PSL1 Grade A pipeline steel plate is mainly used to making pipes for transferring oil and gas in industry.The heat treating process shall be performed in accordance with a documented procedure. Pipeline steel plate furnished to this specification may be as-rolled, normalized, normalized and tempered, subcritically stress relieved, or subcritically age hardened; and X Grades may be quenched and tempered.Normally TMCP delivery condition for pipeline steel plate is accepted by end users.

What is pipeline steel plate (steel coil)
As we know line pipe or casing and tubing have two different manufacturing types, seamless and welded. So pipeline steel plate is used to make welded line pipe, including ERW, LSAW, SSAW welding processes. Further more, casing and tubing in API 5CT standard could also be made in welded ERW type, so pipeline steel plate and coils also covers these pipes. (But in most cases, casing and tubing are required in seamless types.)

Why we use pipeline steel plate for making pipes
With the developed market needs for oil and gas energy, the heavy and large diameters line pipes are required more and more in the pipeline transmission systems. But seamless pipe could not be manufactured more than 40 inch diameters (generally OD is below 20”). So in this situation, pipeline steel plate is coming up and has been taken as the raw material for making API 5L line pipes. Same with pipes, There are also have grades from B, X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X70, in PSL1 and PSL2 levels of pipeline steel plate.

So what is carbon steel plate? To be simple, carbon steel plate is the steel that didn’t contain any alloy steel elements. And pipeline steel plate is as one of the low carbon steel plate. Which the content value not exceed 0.26%. (When referring pipeline steel plate for sour services the carbon is less than general pipeline steel)

Chemical and mechanical properties for pipeline steel
We could find details specifications from API SPEC 5L, but generally for PSL1 pipe (up to X70) is C Maximum 0.26, Mn Max 1.2% (to 1.45% for higher grade MX is higher), P and S shall be less than 0.030%.
