C17200 C17300 Copper Beryllium Material
Beryllium copper is a premium copper alloy with exceptional strength, fatigue resistance, electrical conductivity and non-magnetic performance for demanding precision applications.
Beryllium copper, also known as copper beryllium or CuBe alloy, is a high-performance copper alloy containing beryllium as the main alloying element. It combines the excellent electrical and thermal conductivity of copper with exceptional strength, elasticity, fatigue resistance and wear resistance.
Unlike ordinary copper alloys, beryllium copper can achieve very high mechanical strength after solution treatment and aging treatment. Its strength can approach that of some alloy steels while maintaining good electrical conductivity and non-magnetic properties.
Due to its unique combination of properties, beryllium copper is widely used in precision springs, electrical connectors, switches, aerospace components, molds, sensors and explosion-proof tools.
Common beryllium copper grades include C17200 and C17300. These alloys are available in various product forms including sheets, plates, strips, rods, bars, tubes, wires and customized precision components.
Beryllium copper provides a unique balance of mechanical, electrical and physical properties, making it suitable for demanding engineering applications:
The properties of beryllium copper are mainly determined by beryllium content and additional alloying elements. Small amounts of beryllium significantly improve precipitation hardening capability and mechanical strength.
| Grade | Copper (Cu) | Beryllium (Be) | Other Elements |
|---|---|---|---|
| C17200 | Balance | 1.8 - 2.0% | Co / Ni / Fe ≤ 0.6% |
| C17300 | Balance | 1.8 - 2.0% | Lead (Pb) for improved machinability |
| C17510 | Balance | 0.4 - 0.8% | Nickel / Cobalt |
Beryllium copper maintains good conductivity while providing significantly improved mechanical properties compared with pure copper.
| Property | Typical Value |
|---|---|

The outstanding mechanical properties of beryllium copper are mainly achieved through solution treatment and precipitation aging treatment.
| Property | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 900 - 1400 MPa |
| Yield Strength | 600 - 1200 MPa |
| Elongation | 1 - 20% |

| Fatigue Resistance | Excellent |
Heat treatment is an essential process for achieving the high strength characteristics of beryllium copper alloys.
While substitute alloys may reduce raw material cost, none match the unique performance profile of beryllium copper.
Extensive research into alternative copper alloys confirms that no other chemical element provides the same combination of ultra-high strength, fatigue resistance, and electrical/thermal conductivity offered by beryllium.
Substituting beryllium copper without rigorous engineering validation can lead to reduced technical performance, premature equipment failure, and significant reliability or safety hazards. This phenomenon is commonly referred to in materials engineering as “regrettable substitution.”
Precipitation-hardening beryllium cobalt copper. Higher strength than chrome copper / chrome zirconium copper, with slightly lower conductivity. Specified for mould inserts and resistance-welding electrodes.

Beryllium copper is one of the most important materials for high-performance electrical contact components. It provides a unique balance between conductivity and mechanical strength that cannot be achieved by pure copper.
Compared with conventional copper materials, beryllium copper maintains contact pressure for a longer period, reducing electrical resistance changes caused by fatigue, vibration and repeated operation.
| Component | Advantages of Beryllium Copper |
|---|---|
| Electrical Connectors | High contact reliability, excellent spring force retention |
| Switch Components | Long service life under repeated switching cycles |
| Electronic Springs | Excellent fatigue resistance and dimensional stability |
| RF Components | Stable electrical performance and precision manufacturing capability |
Beryllium copper is widely recognized as one of the best spring materials because it provides high elastic limits, excellent fatigue resistance and stable mechanical performance.
Components manufactured from beryllium copper can withstand millions of operating cycles while maintaining their original shape and contact force.
| Component Type | Reason for Selection |
|---|---|
| Precision Springs | High elastic limit and excellent fatigue resistance |
| Contact Springs | Stable electrical contact pressure |
| Diaphragms | Excellent flexibility and corrosion resistance |
| Precision Clips | High strength with good formability |
Compared with pure copper, brass and bronze, beryllium copper provides significantly higher strength and fatigue resistance, making it suitable for more demanding applications.
| Material | Strength | Conductivity | Elasticity | Main Applications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Copper | Low | Excellent | Moderate | Electrical conductors |
| Brass | Medium | Medium | Good | Valves, fittings, decoration |
| Tin Bronze | High | Lower | Good | Bearings and wear parts |
| Beryllium Copper | Very High | Good | Excellent | Precision and electrical components |
Beryllium copper can be manufactured through various processes including machining, stamping, forming, welding and precision fabrication.
During processing, proper dust control measures should be applied because beryllium compounds require careful handling according to industrial safety requirements.
