Steam Coils

Industrial Finned Tube Steam Heating Coil Manufacturer

Industrial steam coils use finned tube heat transfer technology to efficiently transfer steam heat for HVAC systems, power plants, process heating and air preheating applications.

Industrial Steam Coils

Steam coils are high-performance heat transfer components designed to convert steam energy into heated air or process heat. Using finned tube construction, steam coils provide efficient heat exchange for HVAC systems, industrial heating equipment, combustion air preheating and process applications.

Steam coils are available in different configurations including steam distributing coils, blast coils, tube-in-tube non-freeze coils and flexible expansion designs. Different materials and constructions can be selected according to temperature, pressure and operating environment requirements.

Types of Steam Coils

Combustion Pre-Heating Steam Coils

Three-coil stackable bank used to pre-heat combustion air at coal-fired power plants.

Flex Coil

Steam coil with independent curved tubes allowing internal expansion and contraction.

Large Return Bend Steam Coil

Triple-circuit coil with 1" stainless steel tubing and copper plate fins.

Steam Coil (Welded)

Stainless steel tube with welded joints and removable stainless steel header.

Non-Freeze Steam Coil

Carbon steel tubes with copper fins for freeze-resistant performance.

Steam Coil with Housing

Carbon steel tube with welded joints and aluminum spiral-wrapped fins.

Steam Distributing Coil

Tube-in-tube non-freeze design for reliable steam distribution.

Steam Coil Applications

Steam coils are widely used in industrial and commercial heating systems including:

  • HVAC air handling units
  • Combustion air preheaters

How a Steam Coil Works

Reliable heating solutions for comfort and process air heating applications.

Basic Operating Principle

Steam coils transfer thermal energy from saturated steam to air through a combination of convection and conduction. The operating sequence is straightforward and highly efficient:

  • Steam Supply: Saturated steam enters the coil header.
  • Heat Transfer: Steam flows through internally finned or bare tubes connected to external metal fins.
  • Air Heating: Air is forced across the tube and fin surface, absorbing heat and exiting as heated air.
  • Condensation: Steam condenses into condensate within the tubes.
  • Drainage: Condensate drains from the coil via a properly sized steam trap.

Key Characteristics

  • High heat transfer efficiency
  • Uniform air temperature output
  • Compact footprint compared to hot water coils
  • Suitable for both comfort heating and process heating

Custom Engineered Solutions: Marlo Heat Transfer Solutions designs and manufactures steam coils in virtually unlimited sizes, configurations and material combinations. Each coil is engineered to match the specific airflow, pressure, temperature and corrosion requirements of its application.

Types of Steam Coils

While all steam coils share the same fundamental principle, two primary construction types are used depending on application conditions and freeze protection requirements.

Standard Steam Coils (Straight-Through)

Steam enters one header and travels in a single pass through the tube bundle to the opposite header.

  • Simple design, low cost
  • Suitable for moderate climates
  • Limited freeze protection capability
  • Common in indoor or controlled environments

Steam Distributing Coils

Feature an inner steam distribution tube inside each outer tube. Steam flows through the inner tube and distributes along the length of the outer tube.

  • Excellent freeze resistance
  • Ideal for outdoor air heating
  • Improved condensate drainage
  • Preferred for cold-climate HVAC systems

Both coil types achieve the same objective—delivering heated air— but differ in thermal performance, freeze protection capability and application suitability. Proper selection depends on entering air temperature, steam pressure, system layout and operational duty cycle.
