How Is Seamless Pipe Formed?

Seamless Steel Pipe Manufacturing Process

Seamless steel pipes are manufactured by heating solid steel billets, piercing them into hollow shells and processing them through rolling, sizing and heat treatment to produce high-strength pipes without welded seams for demanding industrial services.

Mandrel Mill Process – Seamless Steel Pipe Manufacturing

The mandrel mill process is a high-precision seamless pipe manufacturing route primarily used for small to medium diameters (25–150 mm / 1–6"). It delivers excellent dimensional accuracy, surface quality and mechanical properties.

Seamless pipes are manufactured from solid steel billets that are heated, pierced, and rolled into hollow tubes without any welded seams, resulting in uniform strength and high pressure resistance.

Mandrel Mill Process

Mandrel mill process flow

A round steel billet is heated to approximately 1,300°C (2,370°F) in a rotary hearth furnace and pierced by a rotary piercer to form a hollow shell. The shell is then passed through a mandrel mill, where a series of paired rolls—set at 90° to each other— continuously reduce both the outside diameter and wall thickness, forming a multiple-length mother tube.

The mother tube is reheated and further reduced to the finished dimensions by a multi-stand stretch-reducing mill. After sizing, the pipe is cooled, cut to length, straightened, and subjected to final inspection and hydrostatic testing prior to shipment.

Overview of Seamless Pipe Manufacturing

Seamless pipes are high-strength, hollow steel tubes produced without welding, widely used in high-pressure and industrial applications.

1 Billet Preparation
High-quality round billets are inspected to verify chemistry, surface condition and internal soundness before processing. Only qualified billets proceed to the heating stage.
2 Heating
Billets are heated above the recrystallization temperature in a walking-beam or rotary hearth furnace to achieve optimal malleability for piercing.
3 Piercing
A rotary piercer forces the heated billet over a piercer point, forming a hollow shell and establishing the initial inside diameter.
4 Rolling
The hollow shell passes through a mandrel mill or elongator to refine wall thickness and outside diameter with high precision.
5 Sizing & Finishing
A stretch-reducing mill sets final dimensions. Subsequent steps include straightening, cutting, heat treatment and surface conditioning.
6 Inspection
Ultrasonic, eddy current and hydrostatic tests verify mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy and integrity in accordance with applicable standards.

Service Life Extension & Storage Guidelines

Seamless steel pipes are inherently resistant to corrosion and suitable for high-pressure, high-temperature service. However, in aggressive environments, proper surface protection and storage are essential to maximize service life.

Surface Protection

  • Pickling and passivation remove oxide scales and restore corrosion resistance.
  • Electrolytic cleaning further improves surface purity.
  • Protective coatings or linings are recommended for acidic, marine or underground service.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store in a covered, ventilated warehouse away from acids, alkalis and salts.
  • Separate different steel grades to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Small-diameter, thin-walled and finished pipes should be stored indoors on racks.
  • Heavy sections may be stored outdoors with adequate drainage and covering.
Engineering Note:
The mandrel mill process produces seamless pipes with uniform grain structure, excellent concentricity and superior pressure containment capability. Correct handling, surface protection and storage practices significantly extend service life and reduce lifecycle cost in critical applications.
